Polk County School Board

Paul Peterson, the art teacher at Southwest Middle School, revitalized vocational education by merging woodworking and traditional art lessons into a unique program where students designed, built, and painted handcrafted skateboards. His after-school club not only sparked creativity and passion but also built self-confidence and accountability, teaching valuable woodworking, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial skills. Driven by his commitment to modern teaching and preparing students for real-world challenges, Peterson was seeking a way to promote this grassroots, self-funded program to the community and stakeholders. His aim was to secure funding to expand the initiative, offering students a creative and practical outlet that empowered them with essential life skills.

"In the fall of 2017, I was a presenter at our district’s Workforce Education Expo when Heaven struck up a conversation about the skateboard design program that brought me to the expo. Heaven asked if I would be interested in partaking in a short video documenting our program. I agreed and we started planning the video. From our first conversation Heaven came across like a professional. She maintained professional communication with me via email including detailed plans adjusted to fit my needs, the pre-production set expectations for the video, timelines for shooting, final product estimates and uses. Heaven was a consummate professional through the whole process. During production Heaven was accommodating of everyone’s schedule, prepared, yet still left room for spontaneity. She kept her co-workers as well as my students focused and on task throughout the filming. We met several times during editing and Heaven showed me what she was working on, listened to my comments and suggestions and headed those words. Heaven entered the video into our public school district’s video competition and won for best documentary of the year. This opened the door for Heaven to do an internship with our school board the following fall. Her documentary video was also featured on the Polk County Public School’s official website; it was for a number of months the first video any visitor to the site saw. I originally used the documentary to promote my program, enticing kids to take Art as an elective class. I played it at a few events to promote my school and program in the community, gaining support from local businesses and organizations including The Lakeland Skate Alliance, Art Crawl, The Lakeland Punk Rock Flea Market and KJV Enterprises to name a few. With the support that my program was receiving I decided to write a grant through AT&T and the Polk Education Foundation to take another step in growing our program by producing artist series of skateboards to sell as a way to sustain this program financially. Our program was one of only two in the district to earn this grant. Heaven’s video was instrumental in the application process. Because Heaven conceived, produced and executed this short documentary on a skateboard design program, our program has grown an exponentially into a model for teaching and learning. It has enabled us to showcase our students’ abilities in our community and affect our community in a positive way. To see Heaven grow with the maturity, drive and determination usually exhibited by seasoned professionals was humbling and inspiring. Heaven is a capable professional, and not only that, is driven by a desire to do good for her community. It has been a joy to work with Heaven and I am proud to be able recommend her services.
